Wisdom Tooth Removal in Rawalpindi

Wisdom teeth are the last molars to arrive, usually between seventeen and twenty-five, and the jaw often has no room left for them. When one comes in at an angle, gets stuck against the tooth in front, or breaks only halfway through the gum, it stops being a tooth and starts being a problem.

Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. A straight, fully erupted one that you can actually clean is a working tooth and removing it would be surgery for no reason. This page is about telling the difference, because the honest answer in a good number of cases is leave it alone and review it.

When a wisdom tooth genuinely needs to go

The reason to remove one is damage it is doing, or damage it is clearly about to do. A tooth that is half out and half under the gum creates a flap that traps food and bacteria in a place no toothbrush reaches, and that site infects repeatedly. A tooth pressing at an angle into its neighbour decays that neighbour from a surface no filling can easily reach.

  • Repeated swelling, pain or bad taste around a partly erupted tooth
  • Decay in the wisdom tooth, or in the molar in front of it
  • A tooth lying sideways and pushing into the root of its neighbour
  • Gum infection at the site that keeps returning after it settles
  • A cyst forming around an unerupted tooth, found on an X-ray
  • The tooth biting into the opposite gum because nothing opposes it

When it should be left where it is

A wisdom tooth that is fully through, in a sensible position, in function, and cleanable is not a problem waiting to happen. Removing healthy teeth preventively fell out of favour in dentistry for a reason: the surgery carries real risks, and most of those teeth would never have caused trouble.

There is also a widespread belief that wisdom teeth push the front teeth crooked. The evidence for that is weak. Front teeth crowd with age in people who never had wisdom teeth at all, and extracting them to prevent crowding is not a reason we will offer you.

What the appointment is actually like

An X-ray comes first, always. It shows the shape and angle of the roots and, importantly, how close they sit to the nerve running through the lower jaw. That single image is the difference between a planned procedure and a surprise.

On the day the area is thoroughly numbed - you feel firm pressure and movement but not pain. A straightforward upper wisdom tooth can be out in a few minutes. A lower one lying sideways in bone takes longer and usually needs a small gum incision and a few stitches, often the dissolving kind.

Recovery, honestly described

Day one and two are the swollen days. Expect a puffy cheek, a sore jaw and limited mouth opening, all of which peak around 48 hours and then improve steadily. Painkillers taken on schedule rather than waiting for pain to arrive make a large difference to how the first two days feel.

The thing to avoid is disturbing the clot in the socket. No rinsing hard, no smoking, no straws for the first few days. A dry socket - where that clot is lost and bone is exposed - is the one genuinely miserable complication, and it is largely preventable.

  • Cold compress on the cheek for the first day, warm from day two
  • Soft food, nothing hot, chew on the other side
  • Salt water rinses from the day after, gently
  • No smoking for at least 72 hours - it is the single biggest dry-socket risk
  • Come back if pain worsens after day three rather than improving

What affects the cost

Extraction cost is not one number. What changes it:

  • Whether the tooth is fully erupted or buried in bone
  • Upper or lower - lower wisdom teeth are generally the longer procedure
  • Root shape and how close the roots sit to the nerve
  • Whether a gum incision and stitches are needed
  • Whether an X-ray is already available or needs taking
  • Loyalty membership, which applies to the procedure

You get a figure after the X-ray and examination, in writing, before anything is booked. A quote given over the phone for a tooth nobody has looked at is a guess, and we would rather tell you that than give you a number that changes on the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does wisdom tooth removal hurt?

Not during - the area is completely numb and what you feel is pressure, not pain. Afterwards there is soreness and swelling for two to three days, which is managed well with ordinary painkillers taken on schedule. The pain that brings most people in is worse than the recovery.

How long will I be off work?

A simple upper extraction often means back to normal the next day. A lower tooth that needed to be sectioned out of bone usually means two to three quiet days. If your work is physical or client-facing, plan for the weekend rather than hoping.

Can all four be taken out at once?

Sometimes, and some patients prefer one recovery to four. But chewing becomes difficult when every corner is sore, so for many people one side at a time is the more comfortable plan. We will tell you which suits your case rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest.

My wisdom tooth does not hurt. Should I still remove it?

Not automatically. A healthy, cleanable, well-positioned wisdom tooth should stay. Pain is not the only indicator though - decay in the neighbouring molar or a cyst on an X-ray are both silent reasons to act. An assessment tells you which situation you are in.

What is a dry socket?

It is when the blood clot protecting the socket is lost early, exposing bone. It typically announces itself with a strong ache three to four days after the extraction, after you had started feeling better. It is treatable in a short appointment, and avoiding smoking and straws for the first few days prevents most cases.
