Tooth Fillings in Rawalpindi
A filling repairs a tooth that decay has eaten into. The softened, infected tooth structure is removed and the space is rebuilt with a material that seals the tooth and restores its shape, so you can bite on it normally again.
Fillings are the most ordinary thing in dentistry and the most postponed. A cavity caught early is a short, inexpensive appointment. The same cavity ignored for a year becomes a root canal and a crown, which is a different scale of treatment entirely. Nothing in dentistry rewards early attention as directly as this.

What a cavity actually is
Bacteria in plaque turn sugar into acid. That acid dissolves mineral out of the enamel, and when it has done so faster than saliva can put it back, the surface collapses into a hole. Past that point the process is one-directional - decay does not heal, it advances.
Early decay is invisible and painless, which is exactly why it gets missed. By the time a tooth is sensitive to cold or sweet things, decay has usually reached the softer dentine beneath the enamel. By the time it aches on its own at night, the nerve is involved and a filling is often no longer the answer.
Tooth-coloured fillings
Composite fillings are bonded to the tooth and matched to its shade, so a repaired tooth looks like a tooth. They need a dry, carefully prepared surface and are placed in layers, which is why a well-done composite takes longer than the silver amalgam fillings most people remember from childhood.
They also conserve more of the tooth. Amalgam needed a shaped cavity to hold it mechanically; composite bonds, so only the decay has to go. On a front tooth, composite is the only sensible option. On a heavily broken back tooth, a crown or an inlay may outlast any filling, and we will say so rather than place something we expect to fail.
When a filling is no longer enough
There is a point where so little sound tooth remains that a filling has nothing to hold on to, and a point beyond that where decay has reached the nerve. Those are different treatments - a crown in the first case, a root canal in the second - and placing a large filling instead buys a few months at best.
A dentist who tells you a tooth needs more than a filling is not necessarily upselling you. The test is whether they can show you why on the X-ray and explain what happens if you choose the filling anyway. We will show you the image.
Why the tooth is sensitive afterwards
A deep filling sits close to the nerve, and the nerve responds to having been disturbed. Mild sensitivity to cold for a few days up to a couple of weeks is normal and settles on its own.
What is not normal is pain that increases over time, pain that lingers for minutes after something cold, or pain when biting that was not there before. Any of those means come back - usually the bite needs a small adjustment, occasionally the nerve has not recovered.
What affects the cost
Filling cost depends on the tooth and the damage, not on a flat rate:
- How many surfaces of the tooth are involved
- Front tooth or back tooth - back teeth take more load and more time
- How deep the decay has gone and whether a lining is needed first
- Whether an X-ray is required to assess it
- Whether the tooth in fact needs a crown or root canal instead
- Loyalty membership, which applies to routine treatment
An examination tells you how many teeth need filling and what each one needs, and you get the whole figure in writing before we start. Patients who have been quoted per visit rather than per plan are the ones who end up surprised.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a tooth filling cost in Rawalpindi?
It depends on how many surfaces of the tooth are affected and how deep the decay is - a small single-surface filling and a large three-surface rebuild are different procedures. After an examination you get a written figure for every tooth that needs work, before any treatment begins.
Does getting a filling hurt?
Anything deep is done under local anaesthetic, so the tooth is numb and the procedure is not painful. Very small, shallow fillings can sometimes be done without anaesthetic if you prefer. You are told which applies before we begin, not during.
How long does a filling last?
Years, often many, but no filling is permanent. Life expectancy depends on size, which tooth, your bite, and how well the area is cleaned. A filling that is wearing or leaking at the edge is replaced before decay restarts underneath it, which is one of the things a routine check is actually for.
Can a cavity be reversed without a filling?
Only at the earliest stage, before the surface has broken. Very early demineralisation can be arrested with fluoride and better cleaning. Once there is a physical hole, the structure is gone and will not regrow, whatever a product claims.
I have several cavities. Can they be done in one visit?
Often yes, especially if they are on the same side. We will usually plan them by quadrant so you are not numb everywhere at once, and we start with whichever tooth is closest to needing more than a filling.
