Veneers are a surface and shape solution. Where the problem is how a tooth looks rather than where it sits, they are excellent.

We turn down veneer cases regularly, and the reasons are worth stating openly.

If your teeth are significantly crooked, veneers are being used to hide a position problem by grinding the teeth down to a shape that can be covered. Orthodontics — braces or aligners — moves the teeth to where they should be while keeping the tooth intact. It takes longer and it is the better treatment. Patients frequently come to us having been offered veneers by a clinic that did not mention orthodontics as an option.

If your teeth are simply darker than you would like and otherwise healthy and well-positioned, whitening is a fraction of the cost and removes no tooth structure. And if you have untreated gum disease, that is treated first, because veneers placed against inflamed receding gums look wrong within two years.

The choice is a genuine trade-off rather than good, better, best.

Done properly, smile design is planning rather than marketing. It considers the proportions between your teeth, how much tooth shows when you speak and smile, the relationship between the smile line and your lower lip, the position of the midline relative to your face, and the gum line.

The output you should expect is a preview — a digital mock-up, or better, a temporary version built directly over your unprepared teeth so you can see and feel the result before anything is permanent. Insist on this step anywhere you go. Approving a plan from a photograph of somebody else’s mouth is how people end up with a smile that does not suit their face.

The recognisably fake veneer look comes from three things: teeth that are too white for the face, all identical in shape, and all exactly the same length. Real teeth are none of those. Central incisors are longer than laterals, canines have a subtly different character, and there is natural variation in translucency from the gum to the edge.

We will show you shade options against your skin tone and in natural light, and we will generally advise a shade brighter than your current teeth rather than the brightest available. It is your smile and the final call is yours — but you should make it having been shown what the alternative looks like.

Veneers are strong in normal function and vulnerable to abuse. Biting nails, opening packaging with your teeth, chewing ice or pistachio shells — these chip veneers and they chip natural teeth too.

If you grind or clench at night, a night guard is not optional. Grinding is the most common cause of premature veneer failure and it is entirely manageable once identified. Otherwise: brush and floss normally, keep regular hygiene appointments, and understand that porcelain does not whiten, so the natural teeth around the veneers need to be kept matched.
