Dental Crowns & Bridges in Rawalpindi
A crown is a cap that covers a damaged tooth completely, restoring its shape and protecting what remains. A bridge replaces a missing tooth by joining crowns on the teeth either side of the gap.
Both are everyday dentistry and both involve one decision that is worth understanding properly: the material. The difference between a zirconia crown and a metal-ceramic crown is not marketing — it affects how the tooth looks, how much tooth has to be removed, and how long the restoration lasts. This page explains the trade-offs so the choice is yours rather than whichever the clinic prefers to fit.

When a crown is needed
A crown is indicated when a tooth no longer has enough sound structure to support a filling reliably.
- After root canal treatment on a back tooth — the most common reason, and the most important
- A tooth with a large old filling that is beginning to crack around it
- A cracked tooth, where a crown holds the structure together
- A tooth badly worn down by grinding
- A severely discoloured or malformed tooth, where a veneer is not sufficient
- The supporting teeth of a bridge, and the restoration on top of an implant
The materials, and the honest trade-offs
This is the part that matters and the part patients are rarely walked through.
- Zirconia — very strong, entirely metal-free, no dark line at the gum. Modern layered zirconia looks excellent. Suits front and back teeth. Higher cost.
- Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) — a metal substructure under porcelain. Strong, long track record, lower cost. The drawback is a grey line that can show at the gum margin over time as gums recede, which matters on front teeth.
- Full metal — the strongest and longest-lasting option, requiring the least tooth removal. Entirely unaesthetic, so reserved for back molars where it does not show. Genuinely underrated for a second molar.
- E-max (lithium disilicate) — outstanding appearance with good strength, excellent for single front teeth. Less suited to heavy-load back teeth or long bridges.
Bridge or implant — the decision worth thinking about
A bridge replaces a missing tooth by crowning the teeth on either side of the gap and suspending a false tooth between them. It is faster and cheaper than an implant and it has a significant cost that is not financial: the two neighbouring teeth have to be ground down, and if they were healthy and untouched, that is permanent damage to two good teeth to fix one gap.
An implant replaces the root itself and leaves the neighbouring teeth entirely alone. It takes months rather than weeks and costs more up front, and it preserves the bone in the gap, which a bridge does not.
Our rule of thumb: if the teeth either side already need crowns for their own reasons, a bridge makes excellent sense and you get three things done at once. If they are healthy and untouched, an implant is usually the better long-term decision. We will show you both plans with both costs rather than defaulting to the faster one.
What the appointments involve
At the first visit the tooth is numbed and shaped to make room for the crown, an impression or digital scan is taken, the shade is matched, and a temporary crown is fitted. The temporary is genuinely temporary — avoid sticky food and chew carefully on that side.
At the second visit, one to two weeks later, the temporary is removed and the permanent crown is tried in. Fit, bite and appearance are checked before anything is cemented, and this is the moment to speak up if the colour or shape is not right. Once cemented, changes mean remaking it.
Making them last
The crown itself does not decay. The tooth underneath absolutely can, at the margin where the crown meets the tooth, and that is the most common reason crowns fail. Flossing around the crown margin is not optional, and for a bridge you need to clean underneath the false tooth with a floss threader or interdental brush — food trapped there causes gum disease and decay on the supporting teeth.
If you grind your teeth, a night guard protects the restoration. Beyond that: regular hygiene appointments so the margins are checked, and avoid using your teeth as tools.
What affects the cost
Crowns and bridges are priced per unit — a bridge replacing one tooth is three units. What changes the cost:
- Material chosen, which is the largest single factor
- Number of units, for a bridge
- Whether the tooth needs a core build-up or post before the crown
- Whether root canal treatment is needed first
- Laboratory used for the fabrication
- Loyalty membership, which is meaningful on multi-unit work
We quote the full treatment including any build-up or root canal before starting, and we will show you the bridge and implant options side by side with both costs where a missing tooth is being replaced. The cheaper option on the day is not always the cheaper option over ten years.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which crown material should I choose?
For a front tooth, zirconia or E-max, because neither shows a dark line at the gum. For a back tooth, zirconia or PFM both work well, and full metal genuinely lasts longest if appearance does not matter. We will explain the trade-off for your specific tooth rather than recommending one material for everything.
How long do crowns last?
Commonly ten to fifteen years and frequently longer. The crown itself does not decay, but the tooth underneath can at the margin, which is the usual cause of failure. Flossing around the margin and regular check-ups are what determine the lifespan.
Should I get a bridge or an implant?
If the teeth either side of the gap already need crowns, a bridge is efficient and sensible. If they are healthy and untouched, an implant is usually better long term — it leaves them alone and preserves the bone in the gap. A bridge means permanently grinding down two good teeth to replace one.
Does getting a crown hurt?
The tooth is fully numbed for the preparation appointment, so no. Some tenderness afterwards is normal for a day or two. The fitting appointment usually needs no anaesthetic at all.
Can I eat normally with a temporary crown?
Eat carefully on that side and avoid sticky foods, which can pull the temporary off. If it does come off, keep it and contact us — it is not an emergency, but the prepared tooth should not be left uncovered for long.
Why does my old crown have a dark line at the gum?
That is the metal substructure of a PFM crown becoming visible as the gum recedes slightly with age. It is cosmetic rather than a sign of failure. If it bothers you, replacing it with zirconia removes the line, because there is no metal in it.
