Fixed metal braces remain the most versatile and predictable option, particularly for complex movements, significant crowding, and bite correction. They are also the most affordable and they work continuously because you cannot take them out.

Ceramic braces work identically but use tooth-coloured brackets, making them far less noticeable at a moderate additional cost. They are slightly more fragile than metal.

Clear aligners are removable transparent trays changed in sequence. They are nearly invisible and can be removed to eat and clean, which many adults find decisive. The trade-off is that they only work while they are in your mouth, and they suit some cases better than others.

Aligners depend entirely on compliance. They need to be worn twenty to twenty-two hours a day, removed only for meals and cleaning. Patients who take them out frequently or leave them out overnight extend their treatment by months and sometimes lose progress already made.

They also handle some movements less predictably than fixed braces, particularly significant rotations, large vertical movements, and complex bite corrections. A responsible orthodontist will tell you when your case is better served by fixed braces even though you came in asking for aligners.

Treatment starts with an assessment including imaging and impressions or a scan, from which a plan and an estimated duration are produced. With fixed braces, brackets are bonded and a wire fitted, then adjusted every four to eight weeks. With aligners, you receive a series of trays and progress through them on schedule with periodic reviews.

Expect soreness for a few days after fitting and after each adjustment or tray change. This is the sensation of teeth actually moving and it settles quickly. Most cases take twelve to twenty-four months, with simple alignment sometimes finishing sooner and complex bite corrections taking longer.

Cleaning becomes more demanding with fixed braces because brackets and wires trap food. Neglecting this produces white demineralisation marks around the brackets that remain visible after the braces come off, which is a genuinely disappointing way to finish treatment.

This is the part patients most often underestimate. Teeth have a strong tendency to drift back toward their original positions, and that tendency does not expire. Retainers are what hold the result.

After active treatment you will be given retainers with a wear schedule that reduces over time but never stops entirely. Patients who abandon retainers after a year frequently return with relapse, having paid for treatment twice. If you are not prepared to wear retainers long term, that is worth knowing before you start.

Teeth move at any age. Adult treatment can take slightly longer because bone is less responsive than in a growing teenager, and existing dental work sometimes needs to be accounted for in planning, but the results are equally real.

Adults also tend to be more motivated with compliance, which in aligner treatment is the single biggest determinant of success.
